In Japan, prefectural and municipal public health institutes (PHIs) report isolation/detection of infectious agents from specimens collected by sentinel clinics and hospitals under the National Epidemiological Surveillance of Infectious Diseases, other medical institutions and health centers (Reference figure).

From the beginning of 2012/13 season (from week 36/September of 2012 to week 35/August of 2013), isolations/detections of influenza virus AH3 was dominantly reported and the report increased from week 47 (November 19-25). After the New Year holidays, the report increased with a peak in weeks 2-4 of 2013 and decreased thereafter (Fig. 1).

In the 2012/13 season, from week 36 (September 3-9, 2012) to week 11 (March 11-17, 2013), isolations/detections of AH1pdm09 from 88 cases in 30 prefectures, AH3 from 3,551 cases in 47 prefectures, B/Victoria lineage from 148 cases in 23 prefectures, B/Yamagata lineage from 242 cases in 31 prefectures and B/lineage not determined from 106 cases in 25 prefectures were reported (Fig. 2).

From week 6 (February 4-10)  to week 10 (March 4-10) of 2013 (as of March 18, 2013)

During five weeks from week 6 to week 10 of 2013, isolations/detections of AH1pdm09 from 25 cases in 12 prefectures, AH3 from 639 cases in 33 prefectures, B/Victoria lineage from 58 cases in 16 prefectures, B/Yamagata lineage from 111 cases in 23 prefectures and B/lineage not determined from 47 cases in 16 prefectures were reported (Fig. 3).
