In Japan, Infectious Disease Surveillance Center (IDSC) of National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) is notified the results of isolation/detection of infectious agents from prefectural and municipal public health institutes (PHIs). Their information are based on the laboratory identification done by PHIs for the specimens collected at sentinel clinics/ hospitals under the National Epidemiological Surveillance of Infectious Diseases (NESID), occasionally at non-sentinel sites and at health centers (Reference figure).

Figure 2. Isolation/detection of influenza virus by prefecture, week 36/2013-week 43/2013

After week 18/2013, a small number of influenza virus isolations/detections was reported. In the 2013/14 season (from week 36/September of 2013 to week 35/August of 2014), isolations/detections of AH1pdm09 and AH3 were reported since week 36/2013 and isolation of B/Victoria lineage was reported in week 41/2013 (Fig. 1).

From the begining of 2013/14 season, AH1pdm09 from 14 cases in 5 of 47 prefectures, AH3 from 23 cases in 4 prefectures, B/Victoria lineage from one case in Osaka Prefecture were reported (Fig. 2).
Of these, influenza viruses isolated/detected from overseas traveler included subtype AH1pdm09 (5 cases: 2 Indonesia, 1 Philippines, 1 China, 1 Thailand/Nepal) and AH3 (4 cases: 3 Philippines, 1 Thailand/Cambodia).
